Setting up a Mailman Mailing List for Stallion Responsive update notifications and it’s a PAIN.
Mailman is built into Virtualmin (control panel I use) as a Webmin module so in theory should be easy to setup (basic setup was easy enough), but Mailman is really old (been around since the 90s, though regularly updated) and not that obvious how to get it to work. Considering hoe long it’s been around the documentation needs work.
Have it fully working as a notification only list (subscribers can’t post) other than the output, the template is ugly from the 90s, so working on fixing it, but currently stuck trying to build a Mailman template that will link to https://stallion-theme.co.uk/stallion-responsive-theme/ (a simple text link) without the HTTP being changed to HTTPS and :10000 (a port number) appended to the end of .co.uk.
Must have some kind of host check that forces https and adds the port :10000, weird. Means I can’t add links to relevant URLs on the same domain the list is hosted on (this domain where all the relevant info is) until I figure out why it’s happening.
WHEN I get it working will have a fully featured free mailing list for sending out notifications. Can then add the thousands of email addresses I have from theme customers I’ve not used for anything, I’m one of those idiotic Internet marketers that don’t upsell :-)
Plenty of Internet marketers pay for lists from Aweber and similar when there’s free (not so easy to use) tools available :-) Used Aweber before for a Stallion update list and did not like it considering it runs at hundreds of dollars a year if you have a fair number of subscribers.
Where I wrote “WHEN I get it working will have a fully featured free mailing list for sending out notifications.” I meant when I get the Mailman Mailing List script working on the server I’ll have a free mailing list…
I got Mailman working (which isn’t a WordPress plugin/feature) as described at https://stallion-theme.co.uk/how-to-upgrade-mailman-mailing-list-tutorial/ (was a pain to get working/upgrade) and have it working as described at https://stallion-theme.co.uk/mailing-list/
As a Stallion WordPress SEO 6.2 buyer there’s no discounts, though I have kept Stallion Responsive 8.0 at only $100 until the 8.1 update (earlier this month) that added major performance SEO features (it’s blinking awesome, ready for Google SEO 2015). Given my old customers plenty of time to buy Stallion Responsive at $100 before the price goes up to $500 next week.
With what Stallion Responsive 8.1 is capable of it’s still a bargain at $500. If I wasn’t the developer I’d pay that amount in a heartbeat for the SEO features you can’t get anywhere else.
In hindsight should have called Stallion Responsive something else to avoid confusion, but like the name Stallion :-)
BTW I sent a mailing list message to all past customers explaining this. If you aren’t on the mailing list you can join at: https://stallion-theme.co.uk:10000/virtualmin-mailman/unauthenticated/listinfo.cgi/stallion
I’m trying to install v8.1, but I’m getting this error:
“Unpacking the package…
The package could not be installed. PCLZIP_ERR_BAD_FORMAT (-10) : Invalid archive structure”
If I try to unpack/uncompress the file on my hard drive, I get this message:
“Error: central directory not found”
Stallion-responsive-8.1.zip file is 1,825 KB.
It looks small when compared to stallion-responsive-child-8.1.zip
Update: The file I was using above is the file I downloaded using the link after purchasing.
I just downloaded from the “Download Stallion Theme” button on the homepage, and I was able to install.
On the other hand, I’m using stallion 7.1.1, I’m going ahead to install. I have not used any child theme, I wonder if there is a way to migrate from 7.1.1 without losing too much customization.
or maybe I should just start creating my child theme on 8.1, and then activate.
=====
just to let you know… trying to install child theme, and I’m getting this error:
“Are you sure you want to do this?
Please try again.”
I try again, and again, same thing.
I’m suspecting it’s because the “stallion-responsive-child” directory does not exist, and I have to create it first?
=====
just to let you know. I’m installing the child-theme, but I’m having issues with this message:
________________________________________ Are you sure you want to do that?
I guess it has to do with the file size? In any case, I’m FTP’ing the uncompressed folder. It finished the FTP process 1448 successfully transferred files.
Sounds like your first download was corrupted, probably a connection issue during the first download.
The child theme issue is almost certainly the size of the child theme, it is huge for a theme and because of the size prone to multiple issues.
Since there’s multiple reasons why a WordPress site can’t install a zip file that’s ~16MB in size (max_file_upload settings, timeout issues, diskspace issues) and the WordPress error messages are about as helpful as an error message that just says “it didn’t work :-)”, when it fails easiest solution is use FTP.
When you unzip the child theme zip file on your PC there should be a folder
/stallion-responsive-child-8.1/
within the folder is another folder
/stallion-responsive-child/
ONLY upload the second folder, not the first otherwise things will go wrong.
Not tried the above, but my guess would be it will throw out errors before activation and won’t work after activation.
After you have the main theme and child them uploaded you should see these two folders under themes
/stallion-responsive/
/stallion-responsive-child/
The number of files you upload is the sort of number you’d expect: actually 1446, but if you were looking through the folders before upload via FTP Windows might have created the thumb index files it creates when viewing images.
So assuming you uploaded the correct folders sounds like you have everything ready for theme activation. You should see both the main and child theme available on your themes page. Now you would activate the child theme.
Upgrading from Stallion WordPress SEO v7.1.1 to Stallion Responsive v8.1
Stallion Responsive is not an upgrade/update to Stallion WordPress SEO v7.*, they are separate themes and are installed independently.
None of the main options from v7 are reused by Stallion Responsive v8*, way too much changed to reuse the v7 options. You can install and activate Stallion Responsive, decide you hate it and switch back to Stallion WordPress SEO v7.* and whatever settings you had for v7 will still be as they were before installing Stallion Responsive.
Basically v8 is a new theme not an upgrade/update.
That being said… Some widget names are the same, this means when switching from v7 to v8 some v7 widgets will still be in the sidebars. Some widgets from v7 no longer exist in v8 (a lot has changed), and some widgets I’ve kept have new features and need to be saved to import the new settings. Any widgets that look broken, go to the widgets page, open the widget up and click Save. Unfortunately WordPress doesn’t have a way to add new features to a widget and automatically add the default widget options, you have to click the Save button to set the new settings.
The Stallion keyphrases, Stallion featured thumbnails added on edit post pages are used by both themes, so if you’ve added a Stallion featured image to all your posts in v7 they will be used by v8, same with the keyphrases.
(I searched comments for export settings and phrase import settings)
I saved the settings on the test site and Im guessings saved to stallion_defaults_custom_1.php because that is the only settings file in the child theme.
Then I uploaded to the live site and selected:
Use My Default Settings File : stallion_defaults_custom_1.php
Not clear from the above which options you are tying to import.
The main options pages of Stallion Responsive (AdSense, Performance, SEO advanced….) lack an export settings feature. There’s an import option (which you used partially), but no export.
The import feature is a manual process, manually create and modify a file like stallion_defaults_custom_1.php and use it to export options to multiple sites.
Having a built in export feature is on the list of things to do, with so many options pages it’s not straight forward.
There are WordPress clone plugins that can copy an entire WordPress installation, so one of those could make a clone of your test site to use on another site.
The Stallion CSS Creator feature for changing font colours/sizes etc… does have an export and import feature. I know you’ve been working with the CSS Creature feature, if it’s the options from that they can be downloaded and imported into another site.
You’ll find full instructions on the Colour Scheme CSS File Creator Settings page. Still need to create a full tutorial for this feature, have a partial tutorial at Stallion Responsive Change Fonts Tutorials which includes info how to turn the feature on.
When the Child Theme is active the files you’ll want to use as the import source are saved to
These are the backups for importing to other sites or for further modification. For example if you decide later you want a font of one of your custom colour schemes a different colour this is how you modify it later without having to mess around editing CSS files.

Stallion Theme Updates?
Hi David,
I am stallion theme customer since version 6.2 but I can’t find any update link on my email about this v8.
Could you send me the download link again please? I can provide proof for my purchased.
Thank you. :)
