I’m sure a few of you have already noticed that over the weekend this site has started showing Clickbank ads that look similar to AdSense ads. I’ve been trying out Clicksor and Chitika on another site as potential replacements for AdSense and I’ve not been impressed so far, (revenue does NOT match AdSense) so thought it was time to give Clickbank ads a try which in theory could make a lot more money than AdSense. On Saturday I manually hacked my version Talian AdSense Ready WordPress SEO Theme (best theme on the site) to run Clickbank ads instead of AdSense ads and two days on I’ve now fully converted the theme to run Clickbank in a similar way to how […]

AdSense vs Clickbank vs Clicksor vs Chitika Ads Tests
AdSense Style Clickbank Ads Tests are not all Going well.
I’ve only done limited testing with the new Clickbank versions of Talian, (three domains about a week of tests) but not impressed with one of the tests so far.
The main reason I created a Clickbank version was for this jokes site (can get over 10,000 visitors a day, so great for testing things quickly) which Google recently banned from the AdSense program because of some of the content: I included racist jokes for SEO/traffic reasons (they are the most popular types of jokes searched for online!!) and it resulted in a lot of relevant traffic and a LOT of racist comments on the site (I gave up moderating the comments (I don’t even read the comments now) a long time ago, some people are awful!).
After the AdSense ban I moved to running Clicksor and Chitika ads, (not optimized, just quickly added to the theme code) as replacements to Google AdSense and was making less money than from AdSense (about 60% of AdSense income).
Thought AdSense style Clickbank ads would perform better, but after about a week testing later and they aren’t (made about 80% the money I made from Clicksor/Chitika from Clickbank).
I think it’s the niche/traffic (jokes) as the other two domains I’m testing Clickbank ads on (both in the money making type niche) are fairing much better, not as good as AdSense ads, but if you can’t use AdSense on a site for some reason, worth testing. There’s also adult niches you can’t run AdSense on.
As I suspected, basically some niches are going to work with Clickbank ads and others won’t.
Have made a ‘hacked’ Clicksor/Chitika version of Talian and using it on the jokes site to see what better optimized Clicksor/Chitika ads can achieve (maybe match AdSense revenue).
Gone a little over the top with what you can do with Clicksor/Chitika, so if I decided to make a Clicksor/Chitika version of Talian it won’t be that ad heavy (definitely not sure about the pop unders).
Good news is I see no reason why I can’t incorporate Clicksor/Chitika into Talian, so might be working on an AdSense/Clickbank/Clicksor/Chitika version of Talian soon :-)
It’s about finding what works for each site and if something doesn’t work, try something else.

How to Increase PageRank?
My pagerank finally went to a 3. I give away a lot of links on my site to folks I interview. If I only have a few links per post on my site, does it have a negative effect on my PageRank? Am I correct to think that the most effective way to increase pagerank is to have one way inbound links? I have thousands of social bookmarking links like Digg and Stumbleupon going to my site but I don’t think they get counted as inbound links??
Alexa seems to have a really low count of links to many sites. Are there answers to why that is?

Clickbank vs AdSense = AdSense Ads Wins

Chitika and Clickbank WordPress Ad Theme
I’m working on another big Talian 05 update now and hope to add Chitika ads with the next update.
Looks like I’ve managed to misplace my hacked Talian with Chitika/Clickbank theme so couldn’t sell it right now if I wanted to (I wouldn’t sell it, it’s hacked together).
For those interested so far have added the following for the next Talian 05 update:
Changed the code so if you disable AdSense or Clickbank the AdSense and Clickbank files are not loaded by WordPress: this means the theme requires less resources to load and so I can add more ad options like Chitika, Amazon and others without having an impact on resources unless you use those ad platforms.
Cleaning the head code: WordPress adds quite a bit of code in the head of a page that’s not used by the majority of WordPress users and other code that though has a function (like pre-loading the next post to the one you are on just in case you go there next) they are not needed, so added to the Talian options page the ability to remove a lot of these lines of code.
Currently Talian takes the title of a post and other page attributes for generating the keywords for deciding which Clickbank products to advertise. Have added the ability to override the automated keywords and set a sitewide set of keywords that the users types in that are to be used for all Clickbank ads.
Have changed the current ability to exclude pages from the navigation menu to be either exclude or include pages from the navigation menu. Will allow those with a lot of pages to list a small number of pages for the navigation menu rather than having to exclude lots of pages.
Those features are already coded in and appear to be working fine on a development server (need to test on real sites before release).
Before sending out the update plan to add:
Chitika ads.
Ability to turn individual AdSense and Clickbank ads on/off via the Talian admin page. Working on this now.
Ability to disable the built in Talian meta tags for those that use SEO plugins like the All In One SEO plugin. Currently if you use the All In One SEO plugin you get two sets of meta tags (not a big deal as they have little value, but still needs a fix).
Add an ability similar to noindex, but it doesn’t waste link benefit/PR: this is a major SEO feature, currently no SEO theme or SEO plugin offers anything like this. If you currently use a plugin like All In One SEO to block pages like the archive pages from being indexed (using noindex which is SEO damaging) this will replace that SEO damaging plugin feature.
Add the ability to rearrange the title element of all page types (like you get with the popular SEO plugins). Not a feature I’ll use, but one people obviously want as otherwise they wouldn’t install the SEO plugins.
If I get this coded into the Talian theme it should replace the majority of useful features you find with the popular WordPress SEO plugins.

WordPress SEO Theme Review
Dave, these will be great updates.
One of my friend bought your theme and did a good job altering the look with CSS. It is not perfect as he is more of a writer and knows nothing about css but it is pretty good.
amishamerica.com if you want to see it. He modeled it off the clean look of the Wall Street Journal. It goes to show you what can be done even if you are a none techy with your theme.
Your code is gold and a result of countless hours of thought. But the CSS can be modified if people want a different look on their site.
We both have bought your theme and we are planning a team effort to create a real ‘wow’ first page that will be our home page on our sites. That is create a template for page.php and make the first page really something else. Maybe like CNN or WSJ or BBC or some site we really like.
That is, create separate regions for videos, news, new articles, links to a buddypress or bbpress community etc. Many major sites have a personalized first page that is really like a user landing page so we are going to try to make something like this. Again your theme has a lot of flexibility on the design side and we thought we would take a try at it. Two proverbial English major type guys hacking css. If we can do it anyone can. (My wife got me a ‘WordPress Geek t-shirt’ for my birthday).
If it comes out good, you are welcome to the code.
One think you might want to check is does your tag page have a rogue extra google ad on it right out of the box? I modified the placement and numbers, so much I am not sure but I thought it might. Also I think the label one on adsense php might refer to something else.
I can not believe it but you are like the only one on the web making themes and plugins that are aware of the issues mentioned above in your comment. This includes some people charging a pretty penny for premium plugins and themes. This is why your theme is the one I use.

I like the customisation your friend has added to Talian, didn’t think to do a white theme version, maybe next update if I find the time to look at the sites code :-)
I look forward to seeing what you come up with on the new site. I’ve not done a lot of research on WordPress 3.1 yet (it’s in beta release now), but I understand they are adding better taxonomy support which might make some of what you are planning easier to achieve.
There’s no extra AdSense ad code associated with the Tag widget. Thinking about creating a new GAT Tag widget, the current one is a bit rubbish.
My eldest son (studying computer programming at Uni) is looking into creating a WordPress SEO plugin for some of the features I plan to add to Talian soon. We are going to try to put those features into a plugin and then see if we can pull some of the hard coded SEO elements of Talian over to any WordPress theme. Might be a case of generating plugin/theme profiles for particular themes, so you use the default theme (no template editing), load the plugin with a theme profile for that theme and it removes the major SEO mistakes: basic SEO mistakes like using a H1 header on the single blog post pages for the title of the site rather than the title of the post, removing headers from the menus, removing nofollow links from comments…
I’m jealous about the WordPress Geek T-Shirt :-)
