Phentermine, Xanax, Viagra and Blackjack Oh My! is apparently what most of my readers are into according to the WordPress comments like Akismet are catching on my WordPress blog :-) What is Phentermine? Phentermine is a short term appetite suppressant to help reduce weight in obese patients, supposed to be used as part of an exercise and diet regime. It is prescribed to obese patients who are at increased medical risk due to their weight. What is Xanax? Xanax (AKA Alprazolam) is an FDA approved drug for the medical treatment of panic disorder, anxiety disorders and social anxiety disorder (SAD). Xanax is the most misused benzodiazepine on the U.S. market!!! What is Viagra? Viagra (AKA Sildenafil citrate) is a prescription […]

Most WordPress Comments are SPAM
I own quite a lot of WordPress blogs and this one is no more special than any of the others (still quite new, so not ranking great yet). My other blogs have a small comment spam problem, might get a few in a day, but this blog received almost 4,000 comment spam attempts since it went live in March 2006 (under 6 months) and most of them recently (last three days, 150 items spammed!).
That is ridiculous.
I only realised yesterday when I found some real comments had been blocked as spam, so made a post of my own and that was also blocked as spam (I might have broke something in my recent editing of WordPress). So if you’ve posted something that never showed up, sorry it got lost in the thousands of spam attempts.
I think it might have gone wrong when some spam broke the WordPress database for this blog (causes a MySQL syntax error). I had to replace a file that held all comments with a blank file (from another WordPress blog) and haven’t managed to re include the old comments yet.
Anyway, just upgraded to WordPress 2.0.4 and installed the Bad Behavior plugin which should block some spam attempts before the bots send the spam (blocks access to the site).
I’m assuming here by mentioning Phentermine, Xanax and Blackjack I’ve attracted the spam bots, so I’ll consider this a partial pay back for when I used to comment spam :-(
Hmm, this comment was marked as spam so I’ve messed something up!

:)) nice writing spam is killing us….
Remove spam manually
I have some sites receiving a lot of SPAM, but I remove it manually because the WP plugins are deleting some good comments too. It doesn’t take much time and it’s not hard to spot SPAM comments. Basically they are almost identical with some minor changes but are never relevant to the content.
WordPress SPAM Filters
One of the things I like about Stallion is it seems to identifying spam. Lately my blogs have been overwhelmed with a new type of spam. The comments almost make sense and relate to the topic.
The reason I can easily see they are spam is the spambot leave a comment title identical to the comment.
Having this extra comment title field really makes it easy to identify spam that has slipped passed normal WordPress Spam filters.
This is an unintended but welcome benefit of the Stallion theme, as if I can to go though those one by one it would be a pain. Now I can mark them as Spam with easy.

Dealing with WordPress Comment SPAM
Many of my sites have been getting that WordPress comment SPAM as well and yes it’s really easy to identify because the comment content is replicated within the Stallion comment title area, they stand out like a sore thumb.
Seams to be a new case of comment SPAM every so often Akismet doesn’t catch and you get a dozen or so comments that is obvious SPAM get through, though if you have moderation of new authors turned on they still have to be approved.
